History of the Company
The company was founded in 1979 by Jeffrey Miller, then a student at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. From an initial venture serving brunch in bed to hungry college students, the company has expanded to handle a range of events from sit-down dinners of 500 to cocktail receptions for 2500. JAM has handled as many as nine events in a day in nine different locations with each one requiring food, staff and equipment. Current annual sales exceed $2 million.
Corporate clients include PepsiCo, Goldman Sachs, McNeil Products, Proctor and Gamble, AT&T and many others. Institutional clients include the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Columbia School of Law and Swarthmore College.
The company employs 25 full time, year round staff and over 200 part-time waiters, bartenders and chefs. JAM acts as its own equipment rental company and has provided its own china, silver and glassware for over 1000 people on a busy day.
Everything on the JAM menu is made from scratch, and cooked to order for each party. This includes all soups, stocks, cookies, cakes, tartlets etc. JAM purchases all seafood, produce, meats and dairy items fresh, using no frozen or canned food. The company's chefs have trained in Europe and the States, and are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, Johnson and Wales and the Restaurant School. Jeffrey Miller, chef/owner, has worked in New York at La Cote Basque, Le Cirque and An American Place, and in France at the 3-star Moulin de Mougins.
While the company handles a range of events, from breakfasts to barbecues, the majority of JAMís events are contemporary formal. All wait and bar personnel are required to attend a training session, and work the events in classic black and white. Silver service is the norm, with the standard china being Classic White: a fine china pattern by Rosenthal.
The company is actively seeking to expand and has bid on a number of catering contracts over the years. The most recent success was the signing of a 5-year exclusive catering contract with The the Racquet Club of Philadelphia.
Historic Aldie Mansion in Doylestown is another site where the company has an exclusive contract.
